It's unnecessary and also of dubious value. You don't need it - absolutely not. Dealerships make a huge profit on the paint protection, salesmen can often earn more commission from the paint protection part than selling the actual car so you can see why they push so hard and imply that you must definitely have it!.

If you want to keep your cars paintwork in tip-top shape for the life of the car, save the money on the paint protection and get your new car externally detailed every six to 12 months as that's about all any high quality wax protection lasts. Detailing includes a good high quality hard wax polish far superior to any of the recommended ones like Autoglym Superguard or GardX for example.

The wax left on the car by the wax is a barrier against environmental vectors like acids etc, which helps insulate the clear coat from oxidizing over time. The point is: a glorified polish at the dealership hyped up as 'paint protection' that will last you years cannot hope to be of residual benefit to the paint after years (or even a year) on the road. Save your money and get the car polished once or twice a year instead by professionals in this field and not the dealerships..
